7. Super Strong - Onthophagus taurus Dung Beetle
Until recently the rhinoceros beetle was considered the strongest insect on the planet. Gram for gram he would have claimed a platinum medal at the Olympics for his ability to lift 850 times his bodyweight. A human with this relative strength could lift 59 tonnes. But in 2010 the Onthophagus taurus, a variety of dung beetle toppled the mighty rhino from his pedestal. The horned male dung beetles fight for their right to mate by duking it out head to head in little tunnels and bracing themselves against the walls.
To test their strength, Australian scientists set up a duel attaching a cotton thread to the rear of each contestant, and letting them walk into a laboratory tunnel. Then the leash was tugged causing the beetle to brace. The boffs discovered that these guys can pull a whopping 1,141 times their own bodyweight. In human terms that’s the same as a 70 kilo person lifting six packed out double-decker buses.
