7. The Robot Building Bangkok, Thailand
Bizarrely, this retro looking block has been named as one of the 50 best buildings of the 20th century. It was cooked-up by Thai architect Sumet Jumsai for the Bank of Asia in 1986 to ‘reflect the computerisation of banking’ and as a reaction to the 1980s hi-tech architecture fad. Sumai took inspiration from his son’s toy robot and though they look daft, the exterior features have a job to do. The robot’s two six-metre eyeballs are, in fact, reflective glass windows to meeting and dining rooms and their lids are metallic sunshades
