9. Valencia Opera House Valencia, Spain

A cross between a space warrior’s helmet and a sci-fi cruise ship, this stunning structure was the result of 14 years of graft by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. Completed in 2005, the building, which sprawls over 40,000m2, had taken nine years to build. It is built around the exterior split shell from which billows a 230m-long plumed roof held up by only two supports, one at the western end and the other in the mid-section. The whole lot is constructed from 3,000 tonnes of laminated steel and white concrete decorated with fractured ceramic tile mosaic that makes the building glow, day and night
