Toxoplasma parasite - magnified by SEM

7. Cat and mouse game

Toxoplasma is a protozoan parasite that spends part of its life in rodents and part of it in cats, although it also gets into humans through infected cat faeces and raw meat. Around one in five in the UK are infected although most of those infected don’t ever realise they have been exposed. The parasite causes suicidal behaviour in infected rats and mice. They stop avoiding cat smells and seek out cat pee marks, where they are likely to be snacked on by passing moggies.
