Racing yaks

2. Yak racing Tibet

The yak, aka the grunting ox is normally used for plough-pulling, wool, leather, meat, milk and cheese. Its dung is used for fuel for fires. Despite their bulk yaks can move fast, but they can be bad tempered and unpredictable. Many yak races have ended at places other than the finish line because that’s what the yaks decided. Now that Tibet is part of the People’s Republic of China, the Chinese claim that they have improved the races – up to 150 yaks can compete in the two-kilometre races. Other events may include yak rodeos, milking competitions and a yak beauty contest. Watch it
