6. Wife carrying Finland
Wife carrying began in Finland and there are now events in the US, Australia and Ireland. The object is for the female-carrying male to get through an obstacle track in the fastest time. The world record is 55.5sec to cover the 253.5m track, which includes hurdles and a water obstacle and the winners receive the equivalent of the wife’s weight in beer. Carries include ‘the Estonian’ where the wife hangs upside-down with her legs around the husband’s shoulders, holding his waist. She has to weigh at least 49kg or wear a loaded rucksack to make up the weight. Watch it
