7. Snail Racing Norfolk
200 garden snails meet for the world snail racing championships at Congham, Norfolk. The world record to cover the 33cm course was set 14 years ago when Archie covered the distance in two minutes. The races take place on a circular damp cloth – the snails start in the centre and speed towards the perimeter. A rival championship set up in Liege, Belgian allows different types of snail to compete such as the hefty Bourgogne and the smaller Petit-gris, often seen on a plate with garlic and wine sauce.
