8. Empire State Run Up New York
This event is as serious as it is strenuous. Organised by the New York Road Runners, competitors come from all over the world to race up the 1576 steps to the 86th floor of the Empire State building. The 32nd event was run in February this year with 249 competitors. The winner, Thomas Dold of Germany, clocked 10min 07sec, a second faster than his 2008 winning time, and his fourth consecutive victory. Suzy Walsham of Singapore hit the marble wall and fell, was stepped on by several other competitors but still managed to win the women’s title in 13min 27sec. Watch it
