hairy mammoth

4. Shaggy’s back

Japanese researchers plan to clone extinct mammals back into existence. They will extract tissue from a mammoth preserved in a Russian laboratory and insert cells from it into an elephant’s egg cells from which the nuclei have been removed. This should then create an embryo that contains mammoth genes, which would be transplanted into the womb of an elephant. If it all works and a mammoth is born, the team hopes to learn why they went extinct in the first place
