Most of our fireworks come from China, which makes sense as they were invented there about 2,000 years ago by a monk names Li Tian. He packed a bamboo shoot with sulphur, charcoal and the food preservative saltpetre, the first recipe for gunpowder. He wasn't too worried about colours though all he wanted was a decent BANG to frighten off evil spirits
