6. Taking the long way home

Until recently, only large birds capable of carrying the weight of GPS transmitters could be followed on their migrations. But now even insects can be tracked. Monarch butterflies fly 10 to 15 miles a day during their 4,500km journey between their summer feeding grounds in the US and Canada and their winter refuge in the high pine forests of Mexico.
