Cloud gaming lands OnLive Game System

OnLive Game System

What does it do? OnLive is a potentially revolutionary new service that streams games from its servers to any screen: your TV or computer, and soon your tablet.

What’s it like to use? You rent or buy games over the internet and they’re instantly there, right away, with no fuss or bother. Playing on a computer doesn’t need any extra hardware. To play on a big-screen TV, you need the Game System and the £7 monthly PlayPack is an all-you-can-eat buffet of 100-plus games.

As long as your connection is over 6Mb per second (most UK broadband is), it really does work, top-quality new games with barely any noticeable lag or slowdown (there’s a lot of extra over-the-internet distance between your button presses and the game responding). It’s a great way to try new games before you buy (most games get a 30-minute free demo). And the tech could kill constant PC or console upgrades as it’s all done at the server. But it’s early days yet…

Flipside says: Great new tech for gamers. But will it take off for everyone? Try on PC before you buy for TV
