We have the technology...to tweet

Chris Edwards | 24 January 2010

"Hello Twitterverse!" was the first message from Timothy "TJ" Creamer, one of the astronauts aboard the International Space Station, as he typed in his first tweet using the wireless internet connection the floating platform now has.

The astronauts could tweet before, but they had to tell someone on the ground what to type. Now, they can do it without the typist, although it's not quite a direct connection. Whenever the space station is in range of a radio dish on the ground, they can take control of a desktop computer sitting at NASA and use that to surf the web.

NASA didn't give the station an internet connection before because they were worried about security, but the technical staff reckon the system they've got won't saddle the astronauts with a space-faring Trojan.
