What's new in games?
| 20 December 2011
The last great game of 2011 is set to launch just in time for Xmas. Star Wars: The Old Republic has finally arrived in Europe, and hardcore PC gaming fans are set to get their fix of Star Wars magic like never before.
The game is the first true Star Wars MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) and looks set to be the only real contender to the legend that is World of Warcraft.
The latest Star Wars title is an online PC-only game, a real-time rolling world where you can team up with other players and venture through the Star Wars galaxy. Choose one of eight classes (including Jedi and Sith), customise your character with weaponry, Force abilities, outfits and professions, design your own spaceship, then decide to align yourself with the rebels or the Alliance.
The gameworld looks absolutely huge. When I first played a preview version about 18 months ago I was impressed with how detailed the planet Tatooine was, and the slick lightsabre battles that had already been put in place. But since then, the development team has added other star systems including Hoth, Endor and Alderaan, teeming with locations familiar from the films.
The excitement around the game launch is at such a high level that hundreds of fans queued up at a store on London’s Oxford Street for a chance to grab an early release copy. The reward for having to patiently stand in line outside a game shop during the freezing cold night? Not just an early copy of the game but a chance to meet and quiz both Alex Freed (Senior Writer for the game) and Star Wars legend, Warwick Davis. It looks like there’ll be a festive Force this Christmas, in a galaxy far, far away…
