May The Fourth Be With You
| 04 May 2012
In true Star Wars geek-joke speak, I’d just like to say ‘May the Fourth be with you!’ And I’m not the only one. As a very timely PR stunt, combined with some hugely entertaining events, Microsoft has jumped on the whole May the Fourth joke to promote the new Kinect Star Wars game.
The Xbox giant is doing it in style by hosting a hands-on trial with Kinect Star Wars at Star Wars fan events at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire and the National Space Centre in Leicester.
The Elstree Empire Day on Saturday 5th May from 9:00am-6:00pm is the first time film fans can visit the iconic Elstree Studios, where the Star Wars films were originally shot. The event is hosted by Gary Kurtz (producer of Empire Strikes Back), and features appearances by the actors who played R2-D2, Darth Vader and Boba Fett. Expect a few Ewoks and Jawas to pop up from time to time too.
In addition to a question and answer session, there will be loads of cool props from the Star Wars films on display, autograph opportunities and a special auction of rare Star Wars memorabilia, which should be fun to watch, even if you don’t have the dosh to bid.
The National Space Centre’s event on Saturday and Sunday 5-6th May from 10:00am-5:00pm sounds a bit more dramatic. There’s loads of dressing up involved with a ton of costume characters and appearances from the 501st UK Garrison, a 300-strong volunteer group who all get kitted out in Storm Trooper armour, and probably march around looking menacing.
At both events you get to play Kinect Star Wars for free (Microsoft is sponsoring after-all), so if you haven’t already played it, you can decide if game is worthy of The Force.
